Recent changes for specialist or consultant physician recognition for Medicare Australia
There have been recent changes to the process for recognition as a specialist or consultant physician for Medicare purposes. Recognition as a specialist or consultant physician for Medicare purposes is now based on the medical practitioner:
being registered with the relevant State or Territory medical registration board to practise as a specialist in the medical speciality listed in Schedule 4 of the Health Insurance Regulations OR
having obtained, as a result of successfully completing and appropriate course of study, a relevant qualification in relation to the relevant organisation as listed in Schedule 4 of the Health Insurance Regulations (that is, Fellowship of the relevant Australasian College) AND
being a Fellow in relation to the speciality
The criteria are set out in sections 3DB and 3E of the Health Insurance Act 1973
Medicare Australia's application forms for recognition have been reviewed and updated. The three forms previously available have been combined into one application form and is available on our website: www.medicareaustralia.gov.au/providers/forms/medicare/specialists An application of $30 continues to apply.
