Competencies
For the purposes of the AFOEM training program, the term ‘competency’ is used to mean the knowledge, skills and behaviours that a specialist occupational physician is required to have in order to practise occupational medicine effectively.
The Faculty has defined the following nine competencies for occupational physicians, which reflect the clinical, preventive and population-based aspects of occupational medicine:

• Research Methods
• Management
• Communication
• Legislation
• Rehabilitation

These nine competencies are used to guide the overall aims, objectives and individual components of the Faculty training program and are used as the basis for setting the Fellowship examination. For a summary of these competencies please consult the Competency Summary
